Welcome to the Southern Cytology Society

We cover a wide area of the South East of England and have long history of successful bi-annual meetings which are attended by a variety of health care professionals

Member laboratories and the SCS committee co-ordinate meetings which are held twice a year.  We try to hold one meeting in the London area and one towards the outskirts of our region each year. The aim of this is to encourage as many people to attend our meetings as possible. A minimum number of delegates are needed to make our meetings economically viable so please support the society in attending our scientific meetings.

Please use the meetings page to download past and future meeting programmes.

At each meeting we invite expert speakers, cytology staff and other health care professionals to speak on a range of diagnostic cytopathology, histology, clinical management and other topics which are relevant to our members.

We welcome comments and recommendations for speakers and in addition proffered papers from members are encouraged. We also encourage members to present case studies on any interesting cases they find during routine practice in their laboratories.

The SCS’s AGM is held during the Autumn meetings together with reports from sponsored meeting delegates presenting their reports.

Our History

Since 1967, Cytology meetings were held at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey for local laboratories. At the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the British Society for Clinical Cytology (BSCC) in September 1971, an informal meeting for technical staff was held. As a result of this meeting the Southern Cytology Society (SCS) was created. Following this, the SCS’s inaugural meeting was convened by J Sims and E Turner. The first Chairman of the SCS was Dr M Levene and was held on November 8th 1971. The SCS was also affiliated in 1972. Today our Chairman is Dr T Matthews.
